Sample Preparation for Human Identification
In modern forensic laboratories, every sample matters — from trace evidence to challenging sexual assault mixtures. Success depends on reliable, contamination-free DNA preparation. Forensic sample preparation is not just a workflow step: it is the foundation of dependable DNA analysis.
Sample Separation
High-efficiency swab sample processing specifically designed to recover small liquid volumes — where conventional spin baskets leave critical DNA behind.

In forensic cases, samples often contain extremely small amounts of biological material. Traditional sample handling methods can retain fluid within swabs, resulting in loss of valuable DNA. An effective spin basket directly influences how much DNA is recovered from evidence.
Excessive centrifugation force can shear DNA molecules or reduce recovery of high-molecular-weight DNA. GenSpin™ operates efficiently at lower centrifugation speeds, helping preserve longer DNA fragments — particularly important for STR profiling, sequencing, and other downstream molecular analyses.
A well-designed spin basket helps ensure that the maximum amount of liquid and cellular material is recovered from the swab. Efficient recovery increases the likelihood of obtaining a complete and interpretable DNA profile, which can be crucial for case resolution.
Differential Extraction
Precision separation for sexual assault casework — enabling forensic laboratories to recover clearer male DNA profiles and strengthen the evidential value of sexual assault samples.
Sexual assault evidence often contains a mixture of epithelial cells and sperm cells. Without proper separation, the predominant contributor's DNA can obscure the minor contributor, complicating interpretation. SpermX™ patented filtration technology replaces manual pelleting techniques.
SpermX™ is engineered to selectively isolate sperm cells while minimising the carryover of epithelial DNA into the sperm fraction. This targeted separation improves the relative proportion of male DNA in the final extract, helping generate clearer male STR profiles.
In cases where sperm DNA may be present at low levels, efficient recovery is critical. SpermX™ protocols support improved sperm cell lysis and DNA release, increasing the likelihood of obtaining a complete male DNA profile even in challenging samples.
Effective differential extraction simplifies downstream analysis. By improving the separation between sperm and epithelial fractions, SpermX™ helps reduce mixture complexity, making STR interpretation more straightforward and increasing confidence in contributor identification.
Designed with forensic workflows in mind, SpermX™ supports consistent results across sexual assault evidence types. The optimised chemistry and workflow help laboratories maintain reliable extraction performance while protecting valuable evidential material.
